Excellent story! Having lived in Cornwall and stayed at the Jamaica Inn many times en route (although not overnight, lest our dreams might be haunted by Manderley), I very much enjoyed the character and scene set in this place.

Did you find the hidden thread, Veronika?

Veronika Bond's avatar

I assume it is related to Daphne du Maurier's famous novel, and the thread of being haunted connects 'your Rebecca' to the unfortunate destiny of the former Mrs. de Winter, blended with the haunted 2nd Mrs. de Winter?

Imagine the fog she’s been in for years and just now is seeing a way out of the dream world, but only to enter into another world where the fog gets thicker and she has only scissors to cut her way through to see the light.

The common thread for me in English literature began with reading Dickens in my childhood: the

London fog, cold, wet mist, or rain, and the London clock strikes midnight... All romantic literature began and was repeated in every literary work, good or bad, after that.

Thank you, Larisa. Do you watch old movies?

I love old movies, but what do you call "old movies?" I began watching English-speaking movies in the mid-1980s when I gained some English. So, some movies from 1930-1960 were left unknown to me. But, some I love, like Last Tango in Paris or French movies I saw in Russia. Don't remember English movies besides Way Up, if it's correct with Simona S.

As I said in my note above, the thread running through the story is it contains the title of every Alfred Hitchcock movie woven through the text.

Paul, it is amazing. I understand your story is a puzzle, but I couldn't watch any old movies because they didn't show old movies in my country. Those two "old" movies I mentioned I saw here and loved them.

I understand, Larisa.

Didn't spot a single thread, Paul. Just a compelling, well-written and tantalizing short offering that left me wishing for more!

Thank you, Leon. Do you watch old movies?

I used to, but it’s been a while. I'd love to have nothing but free time to just kick back and wade through favorites - mostly “oldies”. Sigh…..any year now!

Other than everyone seems to be a bit on the criminal side of things.

There do seem to be some sketchy folk about, Paul, but there are clues to the common thread, even in the first paragraph.
