In a dark forest songbirds make for easy prey—best to perch on a branch, stifle your singing, and hope to sit in safety surrounded by silent stars

On one level, this poem is simply about songbirds in a dark forest remaining silent so as not to disclose their location to predators, and works well that way. But on another level, it could just as easily be about immigrants (or writers) saying silent in order to avoid deportation in Trump's America.
