I watch the evening
falling down
as daylight disappears
and darkness sounds
like cotton wads
stuffed into my ears
The dogs are quiet
the orange cat rests
I’m sure the mice
are out to play
the owl in the barn
is tending its nest
while carefully
eyeing its latest prey
And I think of how
we once made love
on this porch
in the middle of the day
and how we laughed
at such a thing
and what the neighbors
might say
but luckily they never knew
just how we loved
when I loved you
How many nights
did we spend here,
perfecting love
in endless ways?
Those countless nights
we disappeared
twin flames erupting
in a brilliant blaze
Time marked those days
with a simple grace
and it seemed we loved
from dusk till dawn
and even now
I can see your face
lit by fireflies
as you cross the lawn
but the face
is just a memory
and I talk to myself alone
while heaven’s stars
watch over you
beneath a marker
made of stone.
