This piece first appeared in a somewhat different form in the anthology series For the Many Not the Few, Volume 13, 2020.
Love is always love,
nothing more, nothing less.
Love finds us when it finds us,
Why it leaves is anyone’s guess.
Though often marked by passion
and sometimes with regrets,
Love is not the ledger
to balance out
credits and debts.
Love is not a trade in trifles,
with a thumb upon the scale,
nor will it be kept prisoner
when desire becomes a jail.
Although love can be driven by desire - especially when we are young - I like the way a clear distinction is being made here between the two in that love is a bigger entity and exists in its own right.
'Love is not a trade in trifles,
with a thumb upon the scale,
nor will it be kept prisoner
when desire becomes a jail.'
A brave subject. It may be the most audacious, in fact.
