"Headstones in the cemetery direct us

toward a future rooted in the past,

unless one of them is yours."

Oooo, that is so good Paul. Ties in beautifully with your other post today. Both great work, thank you ❤🙏

I have read the first 3 verses. It's going to take me more than a day to get through all of this poem. Give me a month or two. You are the first person I connected with on Substack. I read your work first and foremost. I'm slowing down.

Set it aside and do something else then maybe come back to it? Or not.

Trust me. I am busy and living my life fully right now. I am allowing myself to savor this experience fully.

I can already tell it's going to take me all day to read this poem. Then, I have the added pleasure of listening to your voice, Paul. THEN! I get to read and listen all over again, as if my dad is reading me a bedtime story, which he never did.

On some mornings I would get up early and have breakfast with him, before he headed out to the woods to log.

He would say, "Now I have to make breakfast for you too?"

He would serve me first and we would eat in silence. When the meal was over, I would crawl into his warm place in bed and fall back to sleep with my mom.

In some Asian Societies, the Dearly Departed have a revered seat of honor at the tablr. The Romans had the numinous Lares and Penates, minor Gods who must be propitiated in order to ensure an harmonious household.

I got through all of this poem with the assistance of your voice Paul. I'm not sure I entirely understand what you are saying, but be sure I will eventually.

I'm through verse 4. Not many left to go. I'm having to read out loud, in my own voice, amplifying your wirds, so they penetrate my Brain, not my Mind.
